Fireplace

The fireplace can be a great source of pleasure, and it will also add heat to the main area.

Here are the steps to follow to avoid problems:

1- The main wood storage location is the garage.  There is usually some wood in the basket beside the fireplace.

2- If you have a firestarter, place it on the fireplace floor under the grate.  Place some crushed newspaper, or shredded paper on the grate and one or two logs, bark side up, on top of that.

3- Check to be sure the flue is open!  The handle, which is on the right side of the opening at the top, should be pulled towards you.

4- Before starting a fire, it's important to warm the flue to increase the draft.  This can be done by lighting a rolled piece of newspaper and holding it up the chimney.  Be careful to drop it when it gets close to your hand.

5- Light the fire.  Follow the instruction on the firestarter package. If you are using crushed paper simply put a match to it in several places, or use the lighter.

6- As soon as the log(s) begin to burn add one or two more at a time.  Be sure to leave a breathing space between logs or the fire will go out.

7- Occasionally the wind is so strong that it will blow smoke down into the room.  If that's the case, let the fire go out and wait for the wind to subside.

8- When retiring or leaving, separate the logs using the tongs, and spread them on the sides of the fireplace,...they will stop burning.  Never try to remove the ashes. The housekeepers will handle that when they clean and the ashes are cold..
